Getting around the city

Lisbon is built on several hills, so walking around the city may be off-putting for some. Most people travelling to Lisbon take a tram ride, these vintage trams run all over the city, making it easy to explore the city without the effort of climbing the hills. Taxis are reasonably cheap and there are plenty of them. Most are beige in colour with lights on the roof that indicate price, two green lights advise you that the higher weekend and evening tariff will be charged. Buses run until 1am and tickets are cheaper if you buy them from Carris kiosks before boarding. A day or multi-day ticket can also be purchased and this can be used on trams and funiculars. Lisbon metro system ,the Metropolitano, is the quickest and cheapest way to get around the city and it runs from 6am to 1am. The funicular, or elevadores, provide spectacular views of the city although this can be an expensive way to travel.
